III. Measuring Aging

4. Biological Age Is Dynamic

While there is a steady arrow of time and the deleteriome accumulates over the course of life, biological age as its measure does not move monotonically with chronological time. It is dynamic and can change in response to perturbations and upon recovery (12). In deleteriome terms, acute stress can transiently increase burden (or reveal latent vulnerability) as an organism would prioritize survival over damage management, and recovery can partially restore a younger state as the excessive damage can now be removed. Thus, biological age is not merely a calendar proxy. It provides a path to clinical trials using clock readouts alongside functional measures and outcomes.
