Simply Aging

VII. Supplementary

14. Is cellular senescence a cause of aging?

Cellular senescence can contribute to aging by amplifying local and systemic dysfunction (e.g., via SASP), but it is not a universal factor or single cause. Its causal weight is tissue-, context-, and threshold-dependent: removing senescent cells can improve function in some settings, but can be detrimental in others. Senescence can serve protective roles (tumor suppression, wound healing).
